Product Description
Oil-soluble ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor quantum dot materials with core-shell structure, in which the core is composed of zinc selenide (ZnSe) and the shell is composed of zinc sulfide (ZnS). Epitaxial growth of a protective ZnS shell on a ZnSe core is a key strategy to achieve high fluorescence quantum efficiency and essential stability. Oil-soluble ZnSe/ZnS QDs with excellent blue light emission produced by Alfa Chemistry can achieve very narrow emission peaks and good photoluminescence quantum yield, which makes them an attractive choice for the quantum dot light-emitting diode (QD-LED) application.

Preparation of Water-soluble ZnSe/ZnS QDs via a Facile Aqueous Phase Route
Shu, C., Huang, B., Chen, X., Wang, Y., Li, X., Ding, L., & Zhong, W. (2013). Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, 104, 143-149.
Water-soluble ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with strong fluorescence and low cytotoxicity were synthesized using a straightforward aqueous phase method. This approach addresses the limitations of earlier aqueous-phase methods, such as instability and low quantum yield.
Synthesis Procedure
1) Addition of Reagents
To the crude ZnSe QDs reaction solution (containing 0.02 mmol ZnSe), 0.4 mmol of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and 0.1 mmol of zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(OAc)₂·2H₂O) were added at room temperature. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 9.5.
2) Heating and Stirring
The reaction mixture was heated under a nitrogen atmosphere and stirred for 60 minutes. Following this, the mixture was refluxed at 100°C for another 60 minutes to allow for the growth and annealing of the ZnSe/ZnS QDs.
3) Cooling and Purification
The reaction was terminated by allowing the mixture to cool to room temperature. The resulting product was purified by centrifugation and decantation, with 1.5 times the volume of anhydrous ethanol added. The QDs were then resuspended in a minimal amount of ultrapure water and dried overnight under vacuum at 60°C.
4) Purification and Characterization
Extensive purification was carried out to remove excess ligands and unreacted precursors before performing powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared (IR) analysis.
This method efficiently produces water-soluble ZnSe/ZnS QDs with enhanced stability, high quantum yield, and low cytotoxicity, making them suitable for various biological and optical applications.
