Preparation of Few-layer Graphene by Arc Discharge

Kane, A., et al. (2020). J. La Société Chim. Mauritanie J. Mauritanian Chem. Soc, 2, 30-36.

Graphene has attracted great attention due to its special properties. Many synthesis methods have been proposed, among which arc discharge has a unique advantage due to its low cost and environmentally friendly behavior, because the arc does not produce any toxic gases or hazardous chemicals as byproducts.
Preparation of Few-layer Graphene by Arc Discharge
The reaction chamber consists of water-cooled stainless steel and two cooled electrodes. Both electrodes are made of graphite, one fixed (cathode) and the other movable (anode). The cathode is made of pure graphite with a surface area of 5.7 cm2. The movable anode is a graphite rod with an outer diameter of 6.15 mm, a surface area of 0.3 cm2, a diameter of 3 mm, and a length of 30 mm, which is filled with graphite powder. The DC arc discharge is carried out in a reaction chamber filled with pure inert helium (He) as a buffer gas. The pressure is kept constant at 530 mbar and a DC current of 120 A is applied. The plasma is first ignited by the contact between the cathode and the anode, thus increasing the temperature of the contact point until the anode material evaporates.
